Body cams will be implemented for RCPD and Pennington Co. Sheriff's Office

RAPID CITY S.D. (KOTA TV) - A way to have first hand experience, without witnessing first hand. The Pennington County Sheriff's Office and Rapid City Police Department now are equipping every officer and deputy with body cams.

As a way to be transparent, starting on Monday, 160 cameras will be distributed to every police officer and deputy to wear during their daily shifts.

"We want to make it really clear that our officers do great work, our deputies do great work and this is just going to further prove that to people, when and if the video needs to be put to the public eye," says Tony Harrison a captain at Pennington County Sheriff's Office.

Thirty employees tested three different products over 90 days and decided on the Axon Body Cam 2. Prior, officers and deputies only had car cameras. The body cams will give approximately a 120 degree wide view of all stops.

"Ideally this will now give us a first person account from the officers point of view and it'll shut down or shorten up a lot of those investigations as well as indicating if people are making false reports about deputies doing inappropriate activity," says Harrison.

The three hour training will begin on Monday and go through Thursday.
