SPEARFISH, S.D. (KOTA TV) - Black Hills State University is peddling its way into the headlines by designing an active lifestyle through bicycling on campus.

The League of American Bicyclists recognized the University with a bronze "Bicycle Friendly University" award for its effort to make biking on campus easier for students.

They were recognized for the amount of bike parking they provide, their bike advocacy groups on campus, and the number of resources they provide students.

These resources include a bike maintenance station, a new accessible path from Spearfish streets to the heart of campus, and students who do not have a bike can lease one for $25 a semester.

"It's just one more way we know that we are taking sustainability to the next level and it is something that really sets us apart," said Sustainability Coordinator at BHSU Petrika Peters.

BHSU is working with the City of Spearfish to create a community wide bike plan.
