Autistic Sesame Street character to make TV debut

NEW YORK (AP) – Sesame Street has a new Muppet. Julia first appeared on the show's online digital storybook series in 2015 but now she is making her television debut.

Julia has autism. The shows creators say they hope Julia will help children better understand playmates who have autism.

Julia's puppeteer, Stacey Gordon, has a son with autism. She told CBS's "60 Minutes" she wishes Julia was around years ago when her son was of Sesame Street age, as she feels it would have helped his friends better understand his behaviors.

The character Julia makers her television debut on April 10 on Sesame Street where the show's programs can be found, including PBS Kids, HBO and YouTube.
