Ice dunk challenge soaks ALS research

ROCKERVILLE S.D. (KOTA TV) - The community was getting wet for a good cause Saturday. Gaslight Saloon, in Rockerville made a spin-off of the popular ‘ice bucket challenge’ to help fund a cure for a not so common disease.

Owner of the Gaslight Saloon, Matthew Spaans helped to put on the annual ALS Ice Dunk Challenge, as he has a personal connection with the disease.

"A lot of our family members have died from ALS,” said Spaans. ”We've got five in our family now, and also one of our head coaches for Hill City died of ALS as well."

Spaans isn’t the only one at the saloon that's been affected.

“I have family members that have ALS so I’ll be here every year,” said participant, Dan Tucker.

All proceeds are donated to ALS research to help find a cure, but plunging into a tank of ice cold water isn’t the only way to help.

“We have a big silent auction, we got donations throughout the community, and then we also have Putt Putt.”

Spaans said the saloon raised more than $5,000 at last year’s event. Organizers hope to meet that same goal this year.
