Event Dates and Times
Classroom Building 204 E, South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, Rapid City, Sd 57701
Dr. Tina Nielsen is the Associate Director of the Great Lakes Bioenergy Research Center in Wisconsin. She will be presenting on "Managing a Work-Life Balance." Themes include: Is there truly such a thing as work-life balance?; Relationships (personal), relationships (colleagues), relationships (mentors) – not all are equal, know which one is most important to you; Tips on how to find the support you need to enter and remain in your chosen profession.
Tina Nielsen joined the Great Lakes Bioenergy Research Center (GLBRC) as its Associate Director in 2014. Housed at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, GLBRC is one of four Department of Energy funded centers dedicated to the advancement of lignocellulosic biofuels and products through basic science research. Being on the leadership team of this large research center requires a balance between internal administrative responsibilities with external government and industry relations all while keeping science at the forefront.
Prior to joining the GLBRC, Tina spent over 5 years at BP primarily in a geoscience role. As a deep-water sedimentologist, she has worked both in exploration and production as well as domestically (Gulf of Mexico) and internationally (Brazil). In addition to her technical responsibilities, Tina was heavily involved in university relations and recruiting leading both the University of Michigan and University of Wisconsin geoscience activities during her tenure.
Dr. Nielsen earned her PhD (’08-Department of Geology and Geophysics) from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and an MS (’03-Department of Geological Sciences) from the University of Michigan. Her graduate research focused on marine sedimentology, micropaleontology and isotope geochemistry. In addition, Tina holds a BS (’95) and Secondary Teaching Certificate (’97) from the University of Michigan, which allowed Tina to be a science teacher at Marysville (MI) Intermediate School prior to returning back to Michigan for her MS.
Tina resides in Madison, WI with her husband, Dr. Christopher Nielsen, and two sons; one of which is a budding geologist, the other an avid fisherman.
