Rally death toll continues to climb

Two more bikers were killed yesterday, pushing the official Sturgis rally toll to eight.  But that was before today's crashes, which claimed at least one life.

Daniel Maddaus, 52, from Las Vegas, Nev., lost control and crashed on Highway 83 south of Murdo.   And 52-year-old Dennis Knouse of Huron was killed when he crossed over the centerline on Silver City Road, hitting another biker.

Two other people died in bike crashes yesterday but we don't know if they were rally related.

Maynard Jones Sr., 53, from Missouri was killed on Highway 281 near Wessington Springs. Jones was trying to pass a semi–truck that was making a left turn.  The highway patrol says he was headed toward Sturgis.

On Interstate 90 near Sheridan, Wyo., 46–year–old Dawn Cousins from Montana was killed when for some reason her bike just veered off the road.

Because of all the crashes, United Blood Services is in urgent need of O-negative blood.   UBS is open Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at its West Omaha Street location.

So far, there have been 60 injury crashes and 29 non-injury crashes.  Police have also arrested 230 people for driving under the influence, 41 on felony drug charges and another 136 for misdemeanor drug violations.
