LEAD, S.D. (AP) _ The Sanford Lab is saving about $2 million on its contract with a Rapid City-based company to re-enter the former mine's Yates shaft.
RCS Construction had been awarded a $9 million contract for the project in September 2008.
Sanford Lab Executive Director Ron Wheeler says that cost has been reduced to $7 million. He says quite a bit of work was descoped or taken out of the contract that ultimately will be done by lab employees.
Access through the Yates Shaft is important because it provides a secondary egress from the 4,850-foot-level.
The Yates shaft eventually will be used as the primary entrance and exit for science experiments. The Ross shaft is about a half-mile from the area to be used for the large experiments.
