PIERRE, S.D. (AP) _ A Fort Pierre man accused of stealing a rodeo horse is free on bond.
Twenty-two-year-old Flint David Dahl made his first court appearance Monday and said he will try to hire his own lawyer.
He did not enter a plea. He's charged with felony grand theft and misdemeanor inhumane treatment of an animal.
Dahl is accused of taking the horse, Dually, from the Stanley County Fairgrounds July 5, riding it around town and leaving it in a pen behind his father's store. The horse, which was badly injured, continues to recover.
Dahl's next court appearance is set for Nov. 23.
