Proposed scenic byway gains momentum

The proposal to build a scenic byway that links Black Hills monuments with the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation gains momentum.  For more than 15 years, members of the Oglala Sioux Parks and Recreation Authority have tried to get the funding and support to build a 215-mile scenic byway. After four failed attempts the organization thinks this time will be different.

The proposed byway would connect the Badlands loop, Wind Cave National Park, the Wildlife Loop in Custer State Park, Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse Memorial.  Scenic byway Coordinator Chuck Jacobs says the plan will promote tourism and economic development in the Black Hills and on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.  "We have travelers always wanting to come to the reservation and they have no clue where to go. It will be an opportunity to enhance their visitor experience on the reservation," Jacobs said.

Congresswoman Stephanie Herseth Sandlin was briefed on the project Sunday.  She says she supports the idea.  "I think it holds tremendous promise for economic development in this region," Herseth Sandlin said.

Last year, the Oglala Sioux Tribe received a grant to help fund the byway. But, before the project is completely funded the proposal has to be approved by the state, the tribe and the congressional delegation.
