LEMMON, S.D. (AP) _ A 1,500-acre prairie fire was reported in Perkins County on Sunday, buffeted by wind gusts of more than 50 miles an hour.
The fire broke out about noon midway between Lemmon and Bison.
Lemmon Assistant Fire Chief Harlan Hess says the Lemmon, Bison, Grand River, Lodgepole and Meadow fire departments in South Dakota, Hettinger and Reeder from North Dakota, the U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management units fought the fire for about 3 hours.
Many farmers and ranchers helped, and cement trucks from Lemmon hauled water to the fire.
