Fires spark concern, action

Posted:

A half dozen lightning strike fires, coupled with an increase in the fire danger, prompted the South Dakota wildland fire suppression division to put an air tanker on alert.

A single engine air tanker, called a SEAT, will be on standby at the Hot Springs airport starting Friday.  It will be there for at least two weeks.

A SEAT can carry up to 800 gallons of fire retardant or foam; and can quickly be put into action to help suppress wildland fires before they grow.

Monday night, a thunderstorm sparked six small fires on private land in Custer and Fall River counties.  All fires were contained at about a tenth of an acre.
