When your back is hurting, the last thing you want to do is exercise, but in most cases, gentle exercise is exactly what you need to relieve your pain. The best way to treat back pain is to stay active. Inactivity makes rehabilitation difficult.
Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation is Physiatrist. The Rehab Doctors are local PM&R doctors. They provide non-surgical care for patients. They refer patients for physical therapy. They do injections like facet, epidural, trigger point, etc. They prescribe pain medications and anti-inflammatory medications to patients.
Injection therapy is intended to be a means to an end. The goal is to provide the patient with enough pain relief to bridge from inactivity to physical therapy, where back problems can be better treated with special exercises. For years, spine physicians have used cortisone injections, epidural steroid injections, trigger point injections and nerve blocks to relieve pain in the spine.
Non-steriodal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs. These are drugs like: aspirin, Celebrex, ibuprofen, naproxen, Relafen, Daypro

Relaxation can help you control pain, use your energy more effectively and reduce tension. Since relaxing is a learned response, it takes practice. Initially, you need to set aside specific times during the day to practice. Eventually, tuning into tense, tight muscles and relaxing those muscles will become automatic.
The type of surgery you have will determine how long you will need to stay in the hospital and the type of post surgical care you will need. Many neck / back procedures require one to three nights in the hospital.
